Water Treatment System Building Design: Project consisted of the refurbishment of an existing unused industrial facility for the purposes of treating contaminated groundwater. The main portion of the existing facility constructed in the mid-1940’s is constructed of brick masonry bearing walls with heavy timber roof trusses. A later section of the building is constructed of expanded metal roof joists, supported on steel beams and brick masonry bearing walls. A 20,500 square foot portion of the roof and timber roof trusses and a 144-foot section of a masonry bearing wall were demolished and new roof sections and new wall sections were constructed creating a smaller enclosed area with a 71 foot by 144-foot section becoming exterior to the building. The new roof and wall sections were constructed of structural steel framing supported by steel columns and existing masonry bearing walls. The foundation consists of reinforced concrete grade walls, piers, and spread footings. As principal structural engineer on the project, Gregory Moser, PE, was responsible for the development of the roof demolition sequence, the new structural steel and foundation systems, development of the structural construction specifications, and review of the structural design work performed by staff engineers.
Potomac Electric Power Company (PEPCO), Maryland
WHEI provided structural analysis utilizing STADD.Pro V8i structural analysis and design software to determine if existing twenty-three foot high structural steel framed 230 kV substation disconnect switch towers and multiple bay 69 kV frame switch towers constructed in the 1950-1980 time period would support new loading and also current code requirements. Tower structures were multiple different designs with multiple different equipment loads and multiple different foundation designs. At the request of the Client WHEI also performed third party review of another engineering consultants prior design analysis and proposed design modifications.
Youth Valley Soccer Association, Sayre, PA
WHEI provided documentation, analysis and design, and construction documents of an existing building to convert a portion of a former manufacturing facility into an indoor soccer playing field. The existing area consists of multiple building additions, internal columns, and walls. The project includes demolishing the internal walls and columns, demolishing the roof structure and extending the existing masonry bearing walls to support new clear span trusses.
