What is a Structural Engineer?

The Council of American Structural Engineers (CASE) defines a structural engineer as: "An engineer with specialized knowledge, training, and experience in the sciences and mathematics relating to analyzing and designing force-resisting systems for buildings and other structures."

Structural engineers are responsible for designing structures which will fulfill a specific purpose, adhere to applicable codes, remain structurally sound to ensure the safety of the public and remain functional throughout its intended lifetime. To accomplish these goals, the structural engineer is required to assess both immediate demands and loads, as well as, assess likely future modifications to the structure and potential changes to the surrounding environment which may impact the structure.
